Leigh Town Sat Res 3 - 6 Wickford Wolves

Our Saturday Reserves played an interesting match with plenty of goals, and perhaps not so much defending 🤣

Going down 2-0 inside the opening 10 minutes and struggling to deal with the direct style of Wickford, thankfully we got to grips with the game - 2 excellent goals from Shaun brought us level, before James finished off a Shaun assist to put us ahead. We played some good attacking football and looked in control against a strong opposition, and could (and probably should) have capitalised and gone further ahead. If only we could have kept the lead, instead conceding that always-important goal just before the half time whistle.

A strong team-talk to keep up the intensity and some fresh legs on the field, we started the second half somewhat disastrously - Wickford taking the lead with an audacious effort from kick-off and, whilst we still aren’t convinced it crossed the line, we have to applaud the effort. Our luck continued, with a long throw seemingly bouncing straight into the net…although our otherwise wonderful chairman Josh, kindly refereeing due to a late drop out, is adamant there was a touch, and 5-3 down certainly changed the atmosphere with our young side struggling to keep their heads, allowing a sloppy but well finished 6th goal, and our overall performance in the second half is one we are keen to forget!

Certainly an afternoon to put in the past, but some valuable minutes for this very new group of players to get to know one another, and all credit goes to Wickford Wolves for a well-deserved victory. A particularly good showing from Taf, unfortunately not matched by those around him, but we take the positives and look forward to giving them a much tough battle once the season is underway.

Next up we’re at Rayleigh Town A in a friendly on the 24th of August, our final outing before the season kicks off.
